The Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship,  headed to southern California to the beautiful city of San Diego for the sixth round of the series. The Lites West Regional was dominated by one man, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson, but the Supercross Class Main Event was an intense dog fight between Two Two Motorsports/Honda’s Chad Reed and Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto that was easily the best race of 2012.  Rather than tell you all about it, though, we will let the MotoXAddicts lap time comparison graphs below do the majority of the talking.

On the left of each graph, you will notice the lap times and the numbers on the bottom signifying each lap. Below that, we have the top five riders in the order they finished and each lap time from the Main Event after their name. Also note that each rider’s fast lap is shaded in blue.

Each week, we will be graphing out the top five from each class to better understand how the week’s Main Event played out. Are we total moto nerds? Probably, but because we are not alone, these should be enjoyable for everyone that ventures in weekly to check them out.

In the Lites Class, it was all about Mr. Wilson in San Diego. Deano set the fastest lap of the Main Event (46.9) on the first lap and threw down consistent low to mid 47’s to gap the man that finished second Troy Lee Designs/Honda’s Cole Seely early on. By the midway point of the Main Event, Dean had built up a nice four-second lead that he was able to maintain to the flag.   The second and third fastest times were turned in by GEICO Powersports/Honda’s Eli Tomac (47.2)–who crashed and DNF’ed the Main Event– and Cole Seely. (47.4)  JDR/JStar/KTM’s Matt Moss and Star/Valli/Yamaha’s Gareth Swanepoel finished third and fourth in the Main Event, but actually had the sixth and tenth  fastest lap times. That just shows how tough the track was and that consistent laps paid the bills in San Diego.

In the Supercross Class, the lap time battle and the race overall came down to two men. Ryan Villopoto’s fast lap of 45.674 was only a tick off of Chad Reed’s fast lap of 45.610, and in the end, that is about how far they were apart with one lap to go. On the final lap, though, RV’s time of 47.1 was enough to give him the room to edge out Reed and prevent “Mr. San Diego” from winning his seventh San Diego SX. The third and fourth fastest laps were turned in by JGR/Yamaha’s James Stewart (46.4)–who crashed and got fifteenth–and Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey (47.0)–who finished third.

This week, we decided to try to improve our Lites versus Supercross Class comparison chart by cutting it down to ten laps. This week, however, was not nearly as interesting as the last due to the fact that the track separated the big bikes from the little bikes a bit more. However, it does appear that Ryan Dungey would have had his hands full with Dean Wilson who ran a comparable pace to the KTM rider.
