The 2015 Oakland Supercross and round four of the 2015 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, went to O.co Coliseum, and two more new riders can now call themselves winners in 2015.

In the 450SX class, Honda Racing’s Trey Canard was the man to beat from the first timed qualifier to the twentieth lap of the Oakland SX main event. Trey was fastest in the first and second qualifying practice, won his heat race, and in the main event, the #41 went from outside the top-ten around the first turn to a dominant win. On the extremely technical Northern California ruts, the Oklahoman passed every big dog in the class—minus RCH/Suzuki’s Ken Roczen—on the way to his first 450SX main event win since Arlington way back in 2011. The reason he didn’t have to pass Roczen was due to a huge mistake by the red plate holder. On lap three, while trying to pass Discount Tire Racing’s Chad Reed, Kenny came up way short on a triple and went down hard. With that, Ken finished 15th and surrendered the red plate to Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey who finished second in Oakland. Trey and Ryan were joined on the podium by Reed who finally broke through for his first podium of 2015.

In the 250SX class, GEICO Honda’s Malcolm Stewart got a great start, inherited the lead after Red Bull/KTM’s Justin Hill went down and the #34 never looked back. The win marked Stewart’s first-ever win as a professional. Behind Stewart, the surprise rider of the night, CycleTrader.com/RockRiver/Yamaha’s Alex Martin, stayed close for the whole main event but was passed with two laps to go by the red plate holder, Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb. The #17 got another bad start, was plowed to the ground on lap three by Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers, remounted and charged back to stretch his Championship points lead with a second. While Martin surrendered second to Webb, he stayed close to the battle for the lead and crossed the line for a surprising first-ever podium. With Stewart’s win, there have now been three first-time winners in the first four main events of the 2015 Western Regional 250SX Champiosnhip.

In the Oakland SX lap time battle, it was—like everything else in Oakland—Canard (52.106) laying down the fastest lap. Not only was he the fastest, he was a half of a second faster than any other 450SX rider and even had two more laps—52.563 & 52.665—faster than anyone. I’m not sure if it was last week’s drama with Reed that fired him up or what it was, but “Ice Trey” was on fire in Oakland. The next two fastest laps were turned in by GEICO/Honda’s Eli Tomac (52.666) and Mr. Reed (52.706)

Dungey was only able to clock the fifth fastest lap (52.951), but that was enough to take over the 450SX Championship lead and a second place finish in the main. Photo by: Todd Gutierrez

The fastest 250SX rider on the night was Justin Hill (53.073) who finished ninth after crashing and giving away the lead. On a rutted out technical track like Oakland, it’s as much about not making mistakes as it was about speed. The second fastest lap was turned in by Webb (53.269) and the third fastest lap was put in by Star Racing/Yamaha’s Aaron Plessinger (53.711) who finished the main event in seventh. It’s rare that the we see that first and third fastest laps finish the main event in ninth and seventh, but Oakland was that kind of circuit on Saturday night.
