The 2015 Santa Clara Supercross and round fifteen of the 2015 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, headed to the Bay area’s new Levi Stadium for the first time ever. While the stadium was gorgeous and the weather was equally beautiful, the fan turnout was not reflective of the perfect environment for Monster Energy Supercross. While the crowd was light, the fans that were in attendance saw another dominant win by the 2015 450SX Champion, Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey and an incredible come from behind victory by the newly-crowned Western Regional 250SX Champion, Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb. The wins marked a career-best seven wins on the season for “The Diesel” and the sixth win for the #17.

In the battle for fastest lap at the inaugural Santa Clara SX, the honor went to the man that finished second in the 450SX class, GEICO/Honda’s Eli Tomac (49.027). While Eli was 3 tenths of a second faster than anyone, his mid pack start combined with Dungey being up front early and recording the second fastest lap (49.304), equaled another dominant win by the #5. If Eli is going to add to his win total of two in 2015, he’s going to have to start near the red plate holder. The third fastest lap of the night (49.665) was turned in by the man that scored his career-first podium at round 15: JGRMX/Yamaha’s Weston Peick. Peick’s rise from privateer to elite status in the premier class has been the story of 2015, and with his podium in Santa Clara, he proved the clock is nowhere near striking midnight for this Cinderella story.

As for who was the overall fastest 250SX rider in Santa Clara, that title once again went to Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb (50.705). Webb recorded his sixth win of the eight round season and did so coming back from a first turn crash and blowing by the field and into the lead by lap nine. Cooper’s ride was one for the ages and placed a huge exclamation point at the end of his dream season. The next step for Webb is to prove he’s the best 250SX rider in the world at the Las Vegas SX finale’s 250SX East/West Shootout. The second (50.712) and third fastest (51.059) fastest 250SX laps of the night were recorded by Star Racing/Yamaha’s Aaron Plessinger and Red Bull/KTM’s Justin Hill. Aaron avoided the first turn carnage, but later crashed while running 2nd. Hill—like Webb—came back from being down in the huge first turn pile up. Miraculously, four of the top-five finishers in the 250SX main event were all on the ground in the first turn.
