The 2015 GoPro Hangtown National and the opening round of the 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship has officially come and gone. Leaving the stadiums of Monster Energy Supercross and heading into the opening round of outdoors, Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb and Red Bull/KTM’s Marvin Musquin and Ryan Dungey seemed to have all the momentum with their Supercross Championships, but it was two different riders leaving round 1 with the red plates. In the 250MX class, it was the returning Champion, Star Racing/Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin getting the win and GEICO/Honda’s Eli Tomac dominating the 450MX field. While the 250MX class saw two different moto winners—Musquin went 2-1 to Martin’s 1-2—and four different leaders on the day, the 450MX class was a utter shellacking by the #3.

In the fastest lap time battle at round one, it was all Eli Tomac, all day long. The third year 450MX class rider from Colorado was three seconds faster in qualifying, 1.5 seconds a lap faster in moto one and an incredible 5.4 seconds a lap faster than anyone in the final moto of the day. In fact Tomac’s average lap time in moto two (2:09.621) was more than a second faster than Ryan Dungey’s fastest single lap in moto two (2:10.921). In the first moto Dungey kept it to within 1.5 seconds with a 2:06.667 and finished twenty-two seconds behind the #3, but in moto two Tomac checked out to an astonishing one minute and thirty-one second margin. If Eli was looking to make a statement at round one, he made one loud and clear. To put it in even more perspective, the third fastest (2:11.452) lap was recorded by Yoshimura/Suzuki’s Blake Baggett in moto one and that was nearly three full seconds off Tomac’s average lap (2:08.654) in moto one. Simply put, incredible!

Surprisingly, after 14 months away, Adam Cianciarulo had the speed needed to win. In the end, though, his time away showed with a myriad of big and little mistakes throughout the day. Photo by: Hoppenworld

In the 250MX class, it was a whole lot closer. The fastest lap was turned in by Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo ,(2:09.260) and there were three other riders—Webb (2:09.476), Musquin (2:09.522) and Martin (2:09.632)—within a half-second of his time. Because of mistakes, Cianciarulo and Webb were 8th and 10th overall while Martin (2-1 moto scores) and Musquin (1-2 moto scores) converted their speed into the top two podium spots on the day. The final spot on the Hangtown National podium was filled by Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Chris Alldredge, who used consistency and the 7th fastest lap (2:11.062) to grab his first-ever podium finish.
