Just about every motocross racer in the world heard this from his or her dad growing up: “Jump for show, corner for dough.” Most people are attracted to the action factor of hitting jumps — the risk, the flight, the feeling of conquering something — but it’s corners that make all the difference in a motocross race. Only so much time can be gained on jumps, unless a rider has absolutely mastered the Bubba Scrub, but seconds are begging to be plucked off the lap time in every corner. Entry, execution and exit all play huge roles in a rider’s speed and racing ability. Just about every pass made on the track is made by entering or exiting a corner faster or more creatively than the other guy.

Few riders on the planet have the cornering ability of Red Bull KTM ace Marvin Musquin. He is a two-time MXGP world champion and an AMA Supercross champion largely because of that skill. Musquin is a taller, lanky rider and has what some would call a “Euro-style” on the motorcycle: He stands up a lot and gets over the front of the bike. That allows him to be buttery smooth on even the roughest sections of the track, and why he is typically a stronger rider in rutted, slick terrain like we see at tracks like Washougal and Unadilla.
