It was recently reported around the world that BMX and all-around action sports icon Dave Mirra died earlier Thursday evening of what police are calling an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. We’re reading that Dave was found in his truck in Greenville, North Carolina and that the local North Carolina police are investigating the incident further at this time.

“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon,” said Greenville, North Carolina mayor, Allen Thomas.

At forty-one years-old, Dave was one of the O.G.’s of the Freestyle BMX movement and at one time held the record for the most X-Games medals, medaling in every X-Games from the inaugural event in 1995 through 2009. He was also an accomplished professional Rally Car driver, a triathlete and an Ironman competitor—basically an all around badass. Dave also crossed over into the mainstream pop culture with his hit Playstation video game “Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX” and with hosting two seasons of MTV’s Real World/Road Rules Challenge.

MotoXAddicts’ thoughts and prayers go out to Dave’s wife, Lauren, his daughters Mackenzie and Madison and all of Dave’s friends and family. Below we posted Dave’s last three Instagram posts with the last two just coming hours before he apparently took his own life. It’s eerie and makes you wonder if there was anything anyone could have done.

RIP Dave Mirra!
