Red Bull KTM Factory rider Antonio Cairoli had a disappionting GP in Mexico last weekend. The eight times world MX champion struggled to 6-9 results for sixth overall. He is now 48 points behind Romain Febvre in the championship hunt and not looking anywhere as quick as the Frenchman, or second placed man Tim Gajser.

It is still nearly a year since a GP victory and you have to start to wonder how many more GP wins the legendary Italian can score. Here are his thoughts on the weekend.

“I didn’t feel so good all weekend. The track is very difficult compared to last week (in Argentina) when I was feeling comfortable, and better than I had before that. I had a very bad start in the first moto, but I came back to sixth, which was not so bad, but for sure not what I expected. The second moto was really not good. The riding was not how I wanted it, there were a lot of mistakes and also another bad start. It was just a weekend to forget. Hopefully we can be stronger and stronger over the next two weeks. I want to be in good shape and in the mood to attack for Latvia because that’s a track I like a lot.”

“I did a decent first moto and after a bad start I managed to climb up to sixth place, recovering many positions and that was acceptable. In the second moto however, I had a better start but in the first corners I risked to crash in some contacts with some riders and I’ve lost time. Later I’ve made some mistakes, loosing the rhythm, so the gap has become bigger and this is a track where it is very difficult to recover. However, it was a race to forget, unfortunately it happen sometime and we must forget it as soon as possible. Luckily we are still third in the championship but it is not time to look at the standings, we must rather work hard to face better the next race in Latvia, on a track that I really like.”
