Rookie Monster Energy / Yamaha rider Cooper Webb had a tougher than expected start to the 2017 Monster Energy Supercross season. With the big expectations that followed Cooper into Anaheim 1, people were asking “What’s up with Cooper Webb”, but those people have never stepped into the 450SX class of Monster Energy Supercross with one of the deepest fields in it’s history. It’s a tall ask and even the riders that have gone on to be considered the best in the world—example: Ricky Carmichael—have struggled in their first couple of seasons.

Cooper qualified for the main event out of his semi and went on to finish in 10th. A solid night for any 450SX debut, but with lofty expectations many considered that finish a let down. I personally think it was a solid debut and one that he can build on moving forward. Cooper is a special talent and we will no doubt see the #2 battling for podiums sooner than later, but lets give the rookie some time.
