In the 450SX main event, Monster Energy / Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac and Red Bull / KTM’s Ryan Dungey both passed Rocky Mountain / ATV-MC / KTM’s Blake Baggett and battled back and forth for the first couple of laps before Tomac settled into the lead. While Tomac went on to score his sixth main event win in the last eight races, Dungey fell victim to his charging teammate, Marvin Musquin. Musquin went by Dungey, dropped him and went on to finish second with Dungey crossing the line in third. Tomac’s win cut Dungey’s lead in the 450SX Championship to just 12 points.

In the battle for the fastest 450SX lap times of the night, Eli Tomac (46.753) continued his reign as the fastest man on the planet, but Dungey (46.873) was a very close second. On lap ten, Dungey ran his fastest lap. For the next five or six laps, he was faster than Eli, but from lap sixteen on, Dungey began fading off the pace and worrying more about Musquin—who had the 3rd fastest lap (47.032)—than Tomac. On lap twenty, Musquin took over second, and in the final seven laps of the long, 27-lap race, the #25 pulled a six-second gap over the #1.

The fourth and fifth fastest laps of the Indianapolis SX were laid down by Baggett (47.218) and HRC / Honda’s Cole Seely (48.117). Baggett once again had the pace of the leaders, but he just has not been able to run that pace for twenty-minutes plus one lap quite yet. Seely had the fifth fastest lap time, but it was nearly a full second off of Baggett’s fastest lap and slower than Eli’s average lap time (47.913) over the whole 27 laps. It’s pretty incredible that Eli’s average time on a severely deteriorated circuit was faster than the fifth fastest single lap time for the second weekend in a row. That has got to have elite guys like Seely and others scratching their collective heads.

In the fifth 250SX Eastern Regional Supercross Championship main event of the year, Rockstar Energy / Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne rebounded from his fifth in Daytona with a much needed win in Indianapolis. Zach started second behind and Monster Energy / Pro Circuit / Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy, made an aggressive pass for the lead on lap ten and held strong to the checkered flag. Joey crossed the line in second with Troy Lee Designs / KTM’s Jordon Smith scoring his second podium of ’17 in third.

While Zach got the points for first in the main event, the race for fastest 250SX lap in Indianapolis was won by Savatgy (47.481) with Zach (47.601) a tick off in second. The two were the only 250 riders to breach the 48-second mark, and with that, they checked in more than twenty seconds ahead of third place at the finish. Monster Energy / Pro Circuit / Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo is still within striking distance in the Championship, but Osborne and Savatgy are trying to make this a two-man fight to Vegas.

The third, fourth fastest laps of the night went to the Troy Lee Designs / KTM riders, Smith (48.401) and Alex Martin (48.502) with Star Racing / Yamaha’s Dylan Ferrandis (49.063) quite a bit of time back with the fifth fastest lap. The TLD duo did not have the raw speed that Savatgy and Osborne had in Indy, but they were still able to stay close to the battle for the lead until Martin crashed on lap 12 and took his teammate with him. Smith was able to remount first and hold on to third while Martin crossed the line in fourth. Ferrandis was fast, but in the end, mistakes and inconsistency pushed him back to a 7th on the night
