During the 250SX Group A first qualifying session at the 2017 Detroit SX, GEICO / Honda’s Christian Craig was on a hot lap and nailed Troy Lee Designs / KTM’s Alex Martin in a bowl turn. The impact redirected Martin off the back of the berm, and he hit the ground hard. Alex was fifth fastest in the first session before the crash and seventh fastest overall despite missing the final qualifying session, but the TLD team announced that Alex will sit out tonight’s show.

After the incident, Christian announced from his Instagram account that he was fined and penalized because of the incident. Christian said, “I want to apologize to Alex for what happened in practice. My intentions are to never make someone crash. I was frustrated that my fastest lap was getting interrupted. He had rolled the whoops on the same lap so I figured he would get out of the way since he was on a slow lap. That doesn’t justify what happened but I am sorry and I have been fined and penalized for my actions on the track.”

We will bring you more on Christian’s situation and Alex’s injuries when we hear more.
