In the 450SX main event, Monster Energy / Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac blew around the outside, passed Red Bull / KTM’s Marvin Musquin for the lead on lap four and rode away from everyone for his fourth-straight win. Rounding out the podium for the second weekend in a row were the Red Bull / KTM teammates Musquin and Ryan Dungey finishing second and third. With Tomac’s seventh win of the 2017 season, he has now closed to within seven points of taking the red plate away from the #1 for the first time since Ryan’s win way back at the Anaheim 2 SX in January.

For the sixth Saturday night in a row, Eli Tomac (52.344) has also won the battle for the fastest 450SX lap times of the night. On a track that saw the top 13 riders separated by less than a second in qualifying, Tomac was somehow nearly a half second faster than Musquin (52.782)—who had the second fastest lap—and more than six-tenths of a second faster than Dungey (52.984) in third. Tomac’s corner speed has been on another level, and when he is able to make passes for the lead around the outside of guys like Musquin, it is evident to everyone where his confidence is at the moment.

The fourth and fifth fastest laps of the Detroit SX were laid down by the Rocky Mountain / ATV-MC / KTM duo of Blake Baggett (53.165) and Davi Millsaps (53.222), who had very different main events. Davi started his main event in third and ran up inside that podium spot until getting passed by Dungey on lap 22 and passed by Baggett on the final lap of the race, lap 24. Baggett started his main event outside the top ten, checked in after lap one in ninth and went on to pass the #18 on the final lap to finish fourth. Baggett has been coming from behind all year, but this one was something special to watch. Baggett’s average lap time on the night was the third fastest (54.041), ahead of Musquin (54.136) and just a tick off of Tomac (53.732) and Dungey (54.007). If Baggett can get his starts figured out, he could be another KTM getting in the middle of Tomac and Dungey’s fight for the title.

In the sixth 250SX Eastern Regional Supercross Championship main event of the year, Rockstar Energy / Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne started the main event with the red plate and a nine-point lead in the Championship, but a first turn crash flipped the points upside down.

With Zach finishing 18th and dropping to third in the points, Monster Energy / Pro Circuit / Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy looked poised to take the win and the red plate, but after a crash by himself, an incredible battle back to the front and a last lap pass by Troy Lee Designs / KTM’s Jordon Smith, it was the #44 taking the win. Savatgy did not get his second win of 2017, but he was able to leave Detroit with the red plate after finishing second. With his first ever main event win, Smith moved up to second in the points with Monster Energy / Pro Circuit / Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo still in the fight for the title with his third place finish.

If not for a tip over by Savatgy, the win would have most definitely been his, and that looks evident by the fastest lap times. Savatgy (54.071) had the fastest 250SX lap time by over a half a second over Smith (54.609) and Star Racing / Yamaha’s Dylan Ferrandis (54.695). Ferrandis led nine of the 18 laps in Detroit, but appeared to tire at the end of the main and faded back to finish fourth on the night. Smith may not have had the raw speed of Savatgy, but on the hard, slick and gravelly Detroit soil, he had the fastest overall average lap time (55.465) and he was the only rider that finished on the box that didn’t hit the ground in the main.

There were four different riders that led the 250SX main event in Detroit and Cianciarulo—who had the 4th fastest lap (54.900)—was the first to take the point. Adam led the first lap of the main event, but washed out his front end in the corner after the finish line jump. Adam fought hard to get back up to the podium and is now fourth in the Championship, just one point behind Osborne in third. After Osborne’s crash in the first turn, he was forced into the mechanics’ area to change his front wheel and went 3 laps down. Still, Zach was able to record the fifth fastest lap and score three valuable Championship points with an 18th on the night.

Jordon Smith picked up a new level of confidence in Detroit with a win.
