SACRAMENTO (May 20, 2017) – Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Alex Martin kicked off the Pro Motocross season in great fashion as he rode to an impressive second overall at Hangtown MX. His 4-4 moto result propelled Martin to his ninth career podium finish. Teammate Mitchell Oldenburg also collected a top-10 result in ninth overall, while rookie Sean Cantrell showed moments of skill in his first professional race scoring 12th overall. Shane McElrath bounced back from a first turn crash in Moto 1 to finish the day 13th overall.

Martin’s opening moto saw him start in the top 10 but it took him some time to get by riders in the opening laps. He turned on the speed late in the moto and was able to make it up to fourth. In the second moto, he was battling with the front pack early and was able to hold on for a fourth place finish, giving him second overall.
“Normally a 4-4 doesn’t get you the runner-up spot but I’ll take it,” said Martin. “I felt pretty good today for how hot and rough the track ended up being. It was pretty hard to pass in spots, which made it tough for me first moto. I relied on my fitness to make sure I was there in the end because I was really pushing it most of the race.”

When the gate dropped on the opening moto, Oldenburg was stuck mid-pack but came around the first lap in 11th. He steadily worked his way through the field of riders to collect sixth. In the second moto, he wasn’t so lucky to get through the first lap unscathed and started in the back of the pack. Despite his 29thplace start, Oldenburg made it all the way through to 12th place, still keeping him inside the top-10 overall in ninth.

The newest rider on the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM team turned out a respectable first showing at Hangtown. Cantrell put his name on the map with a great few opening laps in Moto 1 where he rode with the front-runners. He would eventually finish 10th in the first moto, but while having to work with a harder start in Moto 2 he still finished 13th which would give him 12th overall.

McElrath’s day didn’t start the way he wanted after being collected when a rider went down in front of him in the second turn of Moto 1. He came around the first turn in 30th and worked his way back up to 16th. McElrath got a much better start in the second moto and managed to finish 10th for 13th overall.

The team will head to its backyard in San Bernardino for the Southern California round at Glen Helen Raceway on May 27.
