After winning 13 of the last 14 MXGP motos—the last 8 motos and 4 overalls in a row—Jeffrey Herlings has built himself a comfortable 62-point lead over his Red Bull / KTM teammate Antonio Cairoli. Well, Jeffrey had a practice crash this week that will make his points gap a lot less comfortable.

The Dutchman broke his collarbone and two ribs in the crash that will require surgery and KTM reported today that he will sit out the upcoming Italian GP. If Antonio goes 1-1, Jeffrey will still lead the points, but by only 12-points. This is the break the Italian defending World Champ definitely needed.

Check out the press release below.

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings will miss the Italian Grand Prix after breaking his collarbone and two ribs today in a practice crash. More later.

Herlings will have surgery to repair a break to his right collarbone after a crash while practicing at Berghem in Holland today.

The 23 year old is scheduled for a procedure at renowned surgeon Dr Claes’ clinic in the next few hours to fix a fracture near a plate that was inserted for a previous injury.

It is extremely likely that the winner of 8 from 10 Grands Prix this season will miss this weekend’s Lombardia round at Ottobiano in Italy but then has a two week break before the Grand Prix of Indonesia on July 1st.
