Budds Creek, MD (August 18, 2018) – The GEICO Honda squad picked the right race to log a breakthrough day in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross, as the GEICO Budds Creek National, held less than an hour from GEICO’S Washington, D.C. headquarters, saw the team deliver first and second place overall finishes in the 250 class. RJ Hampshire finally grabbed his long-overdue first career overall win. Hampshire has ridden well all season and logged multiple podium moto finishes, but this time he grabbed two in one day, and rode 2-1 scores to his first career overall win. Chase Sexton went 7-2 for second overall.
“It was awesome,” said Hampshire of his first career win. “We just haven’t been able to put two motos together. It’s not because of myself, actually. I’d put a good moto in and I’d almost get killed the next moto–I’d get taken down off the start, someone would land on me, whatever. Chase and I went 1-2 today, and that’s a big boost for our team. They’ve been working hard to improve the bike, and it showed today.”
“My starts have been horrible,” said Sexton. “Today I probably got two top ten starts. Luckily my first lap, second moto, was good enough to get into fourth. I got into third and I saw Aaron [Plessinger, who had already clinched the 2018 250 National Championship] ahead of me and I was like “Yeah he’s not going to put up too much of a fight in this moto.” I saw RJ up ahead, yeah, it was cool.”
Hampshire and Sexton both credited recent bike improvements for the 1-2 performance.
“I feel like we made a big jump, I think before Tennessee, and then we made another step before Washougal,” said Hampshire. “We’ve come a long way and we’re getting close.”
“Chassis has been solid all year, and now I think we’ve got the moto figured out,” said Sexton. “Yeah, I think it was before Washougal. I went out and tested in California for the day and we definitely made some big improvements.”
After a breakthrough run last weekend at Unadilla, where he led laps, Cameron McAdoo was not able to join the podium party with his teammates. Early crashes in both motos didn’t help his cause.
“Budds Creek was not the way I planned to back up last weekend,” said McAdoo, who went 17-12 for 15th overall. “Two crashes on lap one of the first moto, and getting caught in the bottom of a pileup in moto 2 definitely made it difficult. Happy with my riding in the second moto, coming from 38th to 12th. Gonna work hard this week and come out swinging for Ironman.”
This coming Saturday’s Ironman National in Indiana is the final round of the 2018 regular season of professional motocross and supercross in the U.S. Hampshire, Sexton and McAdoo will all be in action.
