The 2014 Indianapolis Supercross and round number nine of the 2014 Monster Energy Supercross series was a wild one. With peg-dragging ruts and holes down to the plywood, it was more about not making mistakes and staying on two wheels than about who could lay down the fastest laps. In the 450SX main event, Ryan Villopoto, James Stewart, Ken Roczen, Josh Hill and Dean Wilson all went down on the first lap, and with that, Ryan Dungey ran away for his first win of the year. With the top three in the points all down on lap one and Roczen crashing a second time and scoring a DNF, it looked like a perfect opportunity for Dungey to make up a lot of points, but Villopoto was able to remount, charge forward for twenty-laps and finish a solid fourth. With the first lap craziness taking out the favorites, Dungey was flanked on the podium by two first-time 450SX podium finishers: Eli Tomac and Cole Seely.

In the 250SX class, it was last week’s winner, Martin Davalos, snatching the early lead and trying to nail down his his second-straight win, but just like at the opener in Arlington, Martin would crash while leading and surrender the lead to his teammate Adam Cianciarulo. From there, despite having a tip-over of his own, Adam was able to get away for his second win of the year and stretch his 250SX Eastern Regional Championship points lead to five over Davalos—who, after his crash, remounted to finish second. Joining Cianciarulo and Davalos on the podium for the second-straight week was Justin Bogle. Bogle seemed to gel well with the gnarly Indy track conditions and, after rounding the first turn well outside the top-ten, passed his way up to finish third.

In the lap time battle, it was Martin Davalos (53.430) and Adam Cianciarulo (53.846) with the overall fastest laps of the Indianapolis main events. With conditions quickly deteriorating throughout the night, the two 250SX riders set a blazing pace that could not be matched in the 450SX main event later on. Unfortunately for Davalos, he also had one of the slowest laps of the main event (1:07.559) when he crashed. This is Martin’s third-straight week with the fastest lap of the main event, but Adam’s consistency is what’s winning the rookie the Championship right now.

The fastest laps of the 450SX main event were all laid down by Ryan Dungey. He not only had the fastest lap (54.078), but he also had the next three fastest laps as well. Surprisingly, the only other rider in the 54’s was Mike Alessi (54.586). Overshadowed by “T-bone gate” in Atlanta is the fact that the Mike is making huge strides forward in Supercross. The #800 was the fourth fastest man in Atlanta’s main event and second fastest in Indy, but so far, mistakes and fitness are keeping the results from matching the speed.
