At round nine of the 2014 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, in Indianapolis we saw two 250SX Western Regional Championship contenders on the line in the 450SX main event. Troy Lee Designs/Honda’s Cole Seely is under the Muscle Milk/Honda tent filling in for Trey Canard, while Dean Wilson is under the Discount Tire Racing tent filling in for the injured Chad Reed. Both have a win apiece out west in 2014, but only Seely is still in the thick of the fight for the 2014 250SX Western Regional Championship, trailing Rockstar Energy/KTM’s Jason Anderson by just four points. Deano was in the hunt, but a DNF in San Diego sent him into the break thirty-three points back and hoping to make up for it during the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.

So with Cole still in the Championship and Deano needing the break from the west to get some outdoor testing in, what’s in it for these two to ride the 450s out east? Well, both are hoping to move up to the big bike class in the near future, and Trey Canard and Justin Barcia have both shown over the last few years that if you perform well while filling in, you can definitely up your value at the bidding table when looking for a 450 ride. Also, when you have a chance to audition on factory equipment, it’s hard to say no.

At Indianapolis, Cole and Dean got their 2014 450SX auditions underway, and at the end of the day, it was Seely coming out with the better opening day. Unfortunately for Deano, he tangled with James Stewart and Josh Hill on lap one while Seely got himself a good start, kept the mistakes on a gnarly Indianapolis circuit to a minimum and scored his first-ever 450SX podium with a third. It wasn’t all bad for Deano, though. After getting himself untangled from Stewart and Hill, the #15 fought for twenty-laps to finish in tenth. Overall, we’re sure Seely was the only one of the two that left Indy smiling, but Wilson picked up some solid experience and finished all twenty-laps. With the series now heading to Daytona, we think the circuit will suit Wilson much better.

After the racing was over in Indy, MotoXAddicts’ Chase Yocom caught up with Wilson and Seely for a couple of quick interviews. You can listen to both by clicking play below.
