The 2014 Red Bull Glen Helen National and the opening round of the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is officially in the history books. With Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto sitting out with a knee injury and GEICO/Honda’s Eli Tomac moving out of the 250 class, there would be no #1 plates in the house, but there were eighty of the best riders in the world on the gates hoping to win one of the vacated titles. The big question was, who would show up with the speed and fitness needed to throw the first punches of the 12-round Heavyweight Championship fight?

In the 450MX class it was JGR/Yamaha’s Josh Grant landing the first shot with the moto one win, but it was the Red Bull/KTMs of Ryan Dungey (3-1) and Ken Roczen (2-2) that had the blazing speed, and at the end of the day, that speed equated to a 1-2 finish at the opening round. Dungey and Roczen got the teammate theme going at Glen Helen and Star Racing/My Phlash/Yamalube/Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin (1-1) and Cooper Webb (2-2) kept it going with a 1-2 team sweep of their own in the 250MX class. The Red Bull/KTM team and the Star Racing/My Phlash/Yamalube/Yamaha team left Glen Helen with three moto wins, the top-two spots in the Championships and four guitars.

In the lap time battle, it was all about the German on the #94 with a 2:16.587 lap time in the first 450MX moto. In both 450MX motos Ken was the fastest man on the track by over a half-second, but in motocross it’s not always the raw speed that takes home the biggest trophy. In the end, it was Dungey that stood on the top step of the podium with the second fastest lap in both motos.

Unlike in the 450MX class, the 250MX class results were all about the raw speed. Jeremy was not the fastest man in qualifying—#19 qualified third behind Christophe Pourcel and Jason Anderson—but from the drop of the gate in moto one on there was nobody in the same zip code as him. After looking at times for both motos, the closest rider was a second behind and only three riders were within two seconds of his fast lap. Looking at the 250MX second moto graph below will show you just why he was twenty seconds ahead of second and almost a full minute ahead of the guys like Cole Seely and Christophe Pourcel who were running fourth and fifth. It was a dominant performance and one that will surely be a wake up call for everyone moving forward.
