The 2015 Anaheim 3 Supercross and round five of the 2015 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, is in the books and Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey and Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb both extended their Championship points leads in their respective classes. For Ryan, while he led the series coming in, it was his first 450SX main event win of 2015, and for Webb, it was his third win in the 250SX class.

In the 450SX class, the 2010 450SX Champion, Dungey, yanked a second place start, quickly passed Yoshimura/Suzuki’s Blake Baggett and cashed that early lead in for the fifteenth 450SX main event win of his career and an eleven-point lead in the 2015 450SX Championship. Following Ryan around the rookie Baggett early on was another class freshman Honda Racing’s Cole Seely. Cole has been waiting for his chance to shine, and Anaheim 3 turned into that chance. The #14 kept the #5 in sight, and after fending off early pressure from his teammate Trey Canard and late-race pressure from GEICO/Honda’s Eli Tomac, Cole hung on for his best-ever 450SX finish in second. Behind Cole, Tomac crossed the line with his third podium of 2015 while the former red plate holder, RCH/Soaring Eagle/Suzuki’s Ken Roczen crossed the line in fourth.

In the 250SX class, Troy Lee Design/KTM’s Jessy Nelson snagged the early advantage on the restart after a gate had malfunctioned and the red flag was brought out on lap six. It was a huge break for Jessy who was running around mid-pack before red flag, but with the red plate holder, Webb, right on his backside, there was no time to enjoy his fortunate turnaround. With Nelson and Webb being the standout speedsters in the 2015 Western Regional 250SX Championship, this was a battle we all wanted to see. For eight laps, Webb shadowed Nelson before finally making a pass stick in the sand section and riding away for his third win of the 2015 season. Behind Webb, Nelson cruised in for his third podium of the season in second, and Webb’s rookie teammate, Aaron Plessinger, grabbed third for the first podium of his young career. It was a huge night for the Star Racing/Rockstar/Yamalube/Yamaha team with their two riders occupying some valuable real-estate on the Anaheim 3 SX podium.

In the Anaheim 3 SX lap time battle, it was Ryan Dungey (57.316) throwing down the fastest lap while trying to runaway for his first win of the year. Like Canard the week before in Oakland, Ryan dominated everything at Anaheim 3. Ryan was fastest in both day qualifying session, won his heat race, won the main event and recored the fastest lap in the main. It looks like the peanut gallery that’s been doubting the former champ may be silenced for a minute. The second and third fastest laps in the 450SX class were recorded by the second and third place finishers in the main, Seely (57.513) and Tomac (57.595).

The fastest 250SX rider on the night was Jessy Nelson (58.271). The #28 showed once again that he is on par with Webb’s speed, but it simply looked like Webb wore the KTM rider down. Webb’s fastest lap (58.634) was the second fastest, nearly a half second off of Nelson’s, but it looked like Webb could run that pace all night long. The third fastest lap (59.572) was turned in by the rookie Aaron Plessinger.
