The 2015 Daytona Supercross and round ten of the 2015 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, was once again a Red Bull/KTM sweep. The Austrian manufacturer has now swept four out of five rounds raced in the East. In the 450SX class, Ryan Dungey got a top-five start, and after fighting off Honda Racing’s Cole Seely and passing BTO Sports/KTM’s Andrew Short for the lead on lap eight, the number five rode away for his first-ever Daytona SX win. In the 250SX class, Ryan’s Red Bull/KTM teammate, Marvin Musquin, used the holeshot and go wire-to-wire method to get his win. In the end, the results were the same with both getting the win and hanging on to the red plates heading into Indianapolis next week.

Jeremy Martin showed the speed that won him the 2014 250SX AMA Motocross Champion in Daytona, but it looked like the #6 got tired at the end of the main event. In the end, Jeremy finished 3rd behind Musquin and Bogle. Photo by: Hoppenworld

In the Daytona SX lap time battle, there were quite a few surpises. The first surprise for some was, that it was the top two 250SX rider with the two fastest main event lap times: Star Racing/Yamalube/Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin (1:05.688) and Musquin (1:06.114). The third fastest 250SX lap (1:06.591) was laid down by GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle, who was just a tick off the top 450SX time as well. The first thought is always, wow, those 250SX boys were hauling the mail, but when you take in mind that the sandy Daytona soil gets chewed up and rougher as the night goes on and the 450SX guys have the last race on the night, it’s actually logical that they would be faster. In fact, last year, Ryan Villopoto had the fastest lap time, and the next four fastest laps were all from the 250SX main event.

Seely (14) used some of the fastest laps of the night to catch Dungey (5), but he was never able to make a pass stick on the 450SX Championship leader. Photo by: Hoppenworld

While the 250SX riders being faster than the 450SX riders in Daytona might surprise some, everyone was surprised to see who the two fastest 450SX riders were at the end of the night. On Saturday night in Daytona, RCH/Soaring Eagle/Suzuki’s Broc Tickle (1:06.361) and Cole Seely (1:06.506) were the fastest 450SX riders in the world. Unfortunately neither rider was able to convert that speed into a podium appearance. For Broc, that speed was used to carve through the pack to finish 10th after a first turn crash left him on the ground in dead last, but Cole legitimately had a chance at scoring his first win. The #14 started just outside the top-five and was trying to pass Dungey for second when he got the door slammed shut and was left picking up his Honda. Cole came back to finish a solid 4th, and with Daytona requiring a lot of the same skills you need for outdoors, he opened all our eyes to what we might see this summer.

Musquin has now won three of the four Eastern Regional 250SX main events and carries a 12 point lead into Indianapolis. If the #6 and the #1 want to beat the #25, they’re going to have to figure out how to beat him to the first turn. Photo by: Hoppenworld
