Last weekend while battling with the Belgian Clement Desalle for a podium at the 2015 MXGP of Trentino, American Ryan Villopoto had one of the weirdest crashes we’ve ever witnessed at the top levels of motocross. Simply put, he “Larry oooped out.” Combine this with RV’s stall off the gate in Qatar and we have seen two of the strangest happenings involving one of the best riders to ever throw a leg over a dirt bike.

Is it nerves, race rust, lack of fitness, a mental collapse brought on by being challenged like never before? All have been discussed, but when you’re talking about a champion who has thrived in the most stressful race conditions ever, it’s hard to think any of that could affect him. Either way, the multi-time AMA Champ is now 6th in the MXGP World Championship and nursing an injury heading into Valkenswaard this weekend, so it may get worse before it gets better.

After his crash in Italy, RV2 made a couple comments about it. You can hear what the #2 said about the crash below. Scroll down more to watch the crash on video.

“Honestly, I don’t even know what happened. Everything was good, and then wham, I was on the ground. I went to the medical center and for an X-ray but they couldn’t tell me if I broke anything or not. So we packed up headed to Milan and flew back to Belgium Monday afternoon.

“On Tuesday, I saw a doctor who confirmed what I didn’t want to hear: I broke my tailbone in four spots. Unfortunately, there’s nothing they can do for it, so basically, we just have to wait and let it heal. I want to race and plan on riding on Friday. After that we can make the call if we’re going to line up at Valkenswaard. Hopefully I’ll have better news here shortly… – RV
