At the 2015 Thunder Valley National, the 450MX Championship leader Eli Tomac crashed hard in moto two and saw his perfect season disappear. After winning his fifth straight moto in moto one, the #3 was leading moto two by his normal comfortable margin before disaster struck and he high-sided his Honda 450 in a downhill choppy sweeper section. The crash was violent enough to dislocate Eli’s shoulder and end his day early. With Eli on the ground, Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey went on to win his first overall of 2015, taking over the 450MX Championship points lead by three points heading to round four. Eli was obviously not available for comment, but Dungey said after the race, “Eli had definitely set the tone this year so far. It’s no mystery that he’s going really fast. In our sport the faster you go, things are coming at you pretty quick.”

When Eli got back to the Asterisk Medical Mobile Unit, the doctors at the track were able to pop his shoulder back into place, but Eli was still visibly in a lot of pain when we saw him leave the rig. We asked for a comment from the GEICO/Honda team and they could not elaborate more, other than to say that “Eli would be further evaluated early next week.”

I know we are told that Eli only dislocated his shoulder—which is bad enough to end his season if surgery is needed—but when looking at him trying to get around, it looked like there might be more injuries. Eli looked to be limping and could barely get himself from the Medical Mule to the Asterisk Medical Mobile Unit under his own power. Hopefully in the coming days we find out Eli will be able to ride through it, but it did not look good on Saturday. We will give more updates in this post when we hear more.
