The 2015 Red Bud National and the seventh round of the 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is in the books, and it was all Yamaha on top of the podium in both classes. In the 450MX class, JGR/Auto Trader/Toyota/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia celebrated the Fourth of July by scoring his and the JGRMX teams first-ever back-to-back 450MX overall wins, while Star Racing/Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin swept both the 250MX motos. We’re not sure when the last time was that Yamaha swept both classes, but you would have to dig pretty deep into the archives to find it. For Barcia, the 2-1 score at Red Bud removed the asterisk from his overall win in the mud a week earlier, and for Jeremy, the win means he will once again have the red plate for his home national next weekend at Spring Creek.

In the fastest lap time battle, it was once again Ryan Dungey recording the fastest lap of the day (2:00.405). Ryan was the fastest rider in qualifying (2:00.611), moto one and moto two (2:02.669) and had the fastest average lap time (2:04.300), but in motocross, the fastest rider does not always take home the biggest trophy. Bam Bam was the sixth fastest 450MX rider in qualifying (2:01.908), the third fastest rider in moto two (2:02.781) and had the second fastest overall lap of the day (2:00.702) in moto one, but the #51 took home the biggest trophy from Red Bud because of his starts and his unwillingness to surrender anything to the #5. Barcia, incredibly, scored his fastest average lap time (2:04.394) in moto two which was just a tick off of Dungey’s average lap time in moto one on a much smoother track.

The third, fourth and fifth fastest 450MX laps were recorded by RCH/Jimmy Johns/Suzuki’s Ken Roczen (2:02.029), JGR/Auto Trader/Toyota/Yamaha’s Weston Peick (2:02.496) and Rockstar/Husqvarna’s Christophe Pourcel (2:03.046). As you can see by the times, nobody was near the Barcia-Dungey battle at Red Bud, though. While Kenny’s raw speed was a full second and a half off the Dungey-Barcia battle, his third fastest overall average lap time (2:04.830) was less than a half-second off their pace. If Kenny’s going to battle for wins and this Championship, though, he’s going to need to find a little more pace during this week off.

Cooper Webb is back in the house. Two crashes pushed the #17 to a 3rd overall finish, but he showed he has the speed and fitness to win. Photo by: Hoppenworld

Over the first six rounds of the 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross 250MX Championship, it’s been all about Jeremy Martin and Red Bull/KTM’s Marvin Musquin up front, but at Red Bud, Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb reinstated his name into the conversation. Cooper had returned from injury last weekend at Budds Creek, but poor conditions and even worse starts made him a non-factor. At Red Bud, though, Cooper passed J. Martin straight up, led sixteen laps, had the fastest 250MX lap time of the day (2:00.756)—just a tick off Barcia and Dungey—and was two minor top-overs from going 1-1. J. Martin was fast and even had the second fastest 250MX time of the day (2:01.487) and the fastest 250MX average lap time (2:04.782), but his single-lap sprint speed was seven-tenths of a second shy of his teammate’s time. There’s no doubt that Webb is going to be playing the spoiler role from here on in the middle of the Martin-Musquin Championship battle.

The third (2:01.583), fourth (2:01.846) and fifth (2:02.194) fastest 250MX laps belonged to Musquin, Rockstar/Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne and Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Chris Alldredge. Musquin had decent speed at round seven, but an injured wrist had him just trying to survive until the break. For Osborne, he used his speed to go from 15th to 2nd in moto two and score his third 2nd overall for 2015.

The surprise of the day was the rider with the 6th fastest 250MX lap time (2:02.539), GEICO/Honda’s Christian Craig. Craig was the sixth fastest 250MX rider on the smoother moto one circuit, but in moto two, he led the first half of the race, had the second fastest lap time (2:05.271) and hung on for 3rd and his first-ever podium in a moto. It was an awesome ride that was rewarded with a signed contract with the GEICO/Honda squad for 2016.
