The 2015 Spring Creek National and the eighth round of the 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship saw hometown boys Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey and Star Racing/Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin both extend their Championship leads. In the 450MX class, Ryan pushed his Championship lead to 56 points over RCH/Suzuki’s Ken Roczen with a perfect 1-1 day, while Jeremy was edged out for the overall win by his Star Racing teammate Cooper Webb but was still able to stretch his lead over Red Bull/KTM’s Marvin Musquin to 19 points. With the Minnesota boys winning three of four motos and leaving their home state with a stronghold on the red plates, it was a great day to be from the Gopher State.

In the fastest lap time battle, it was once again Ryan Dungey all day long. Ryan was fastest in qualifying (2:21.826), fastest in moto one (2:15.821), fastest in moto two (2:13.746) and recorded the fastest average lap time (2:18.006) en-route to a perfect day. The only rider to stay within a second of the #5 was the #51, JGRMX/Autotrader.com/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia. Bam Bam was the fourth fastest rider in qualifying (2:24.710) but had the second fastest lap in both motos—moto 1 (2:16.229), moto 2 (2:14.290)—on his way to a 2-2 day. Barcia came into Spring Creek on a two-race win streak, but while his newfound confidence was enough to keep Dungey honest, it was not enough to keep the streak alive.

The third (2:15.219) and fourth fastest (2:16.525) 450MX laps were recorded by RCH/Jimmy Johns/Suzuki’s Ken Roczen and Rockstar/Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson. Kenny would probably be okay with having the third fastest lap, but his fitness became a big question mark in Millville when Yoshimura/Suzuki’s Blake Baggett, who recorded the 6th fastest lap (2:16.702), was able to make up twenty seconds on Ken late in moto two to steal the final overall podium spot from the German. It was one of those days that has the Roczen camp looking for answers heading to Washougal.

The biggest surprise of the day was the factory HRC fill-in rider Freddie Noren. The Swedish-born journeyman was on fire at Spring Creek and used a start and the fifth fastest overall lap (2:16.672) to score his best ever 5th place finish in moto two. Freddie has always been a relentless competitor that uses consistency and desire to outlast guys faster than him for thirty-plus-two, but it looks like he has acquired some raw speed for his arsenal. Freddie will now take his factory Honda and a head full of confidence into his best track: Washougal.

Over the first seven rounds of the 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross 250MX Championship had only seen two winners, but Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb put his name in the record books as a winner in the 2015 Championship battle. The day started with J. Martin being three seconds faster (2:24.117) than any 250MX rider in qualifying, but Webb used a great start and the third fastest overall lap time (2:18.553) to go 1-2 for the overall win.

The fastest 250MX lap of the day (2:16.333) was recorded by J. Martin. After being three seconds faster than anyone in qualifying, the #1 continued his trend of having a lackluster first fifteen minutes of the first moto. Not only did his slow start let Webb pass him and sprint away, he was also hampered by his clutch lever falling off the perch. Jeremy was able to gather himself but, with no clutch, had to settle for third behind Webb and Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy—who scored the fifth fastest lap (2:19.116)—in moto one.

The second fastest lap (2:18.473) was laid down by Musquin while he led moto one. Unfortunately for the Frenchman, he once again found himself picking up his bike after a small tip over. During the #25’s two MX2 World Championships, he was known as an incredibly calculated and consistent rider, but during the 2015 Lucas Oil Championship, small mistakes have cost him a lot. Next week is huge for Marvin, especially considering he absolutely dominated Washougal in ’14.

The fourth fastest 250MX class rider (2:02.539) was GEICO/Honda’s Jordon Smith. Some may be surprised to see the rookie with a top five time, but the #126 has been fast all year long. Speed is definitely not something the freshman needs to work on, it is keeping the rubber side down. Jordon left Spring Creek with a seventh overall and moved into the top ten in the Championship.
