The 2015 Washougal National and the ninth round of the 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship was the second race pelted by Mother Nature in the last three rounds. In the 450MX class, JGRMX/Autotrader.com/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia looked on his way to winning both of the 2015 mud races, but a small mistake in moto two handed the moto win and the overall win to Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey—extending the #5’s lead to 69 points in the 450MX Championship. Barcia easily won moto one and regrouped from his mistake to finish second in moto two, and Bam Bam’s second overall moved him into a tie with RCH/Suzuki’s Ken Roczen for second in the 450MX standings.

In the 250MX Class, Red Bull/KTM’s Marvin Musquin came into Washougal nineteen points down in 250MX Championship to Star Racing/Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin and left just four points behind the defending Champ. In moto one, Marvin came from behind to pass Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb for the lead and narrowly held off the #17 for the moto one win. For Martin, his Championship lead was depleted by a bad start, a crash and a ninth place finish. In moto two, Webb sprinted to the lead early, was caught and passed by Martin, but regained the lead when Martin threw it away with another crash. When the checkered flag waved, Webb had the moto two win and his second-straight overall win. Musquin and Martin finishing second and third in moto two, but Martin’s ninth place finish in moto one tightened the Championship up more than Martin and the Star Racing squad is comfortable with.

In the lap time battle, it was once again Ryan Dungey setting the fastest lap (2:15.477) of the day after the track dried up in moto two. With the rain falling hard during moto one, it was a completely different track. In the mud of moto one, Barcia (2:28.282) was more than two seconds faster than Dungey (2:30.560), but the fastest rider by far in the mud of moto one was Rockstar/Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson (2:25.909). Anderson was 2.5 seconds faster than Barcia in moto one and nearly 5 seconds faster than Dungey, but a start outside the top twenty did not allow him to get into the top five with that speed. The #51 had the second fastest (2:15.920) overall lap in moto two and looked well on his way to holding off Dungey for his first-ever 1-1 sweep before his crash.

The third and forth fastest 450MX laps were laid down by Ken Roczen (2:16.186) and Anderson (2:16.610) in moto two. Both rounded turn one near Barcia and Dungey, but Anderson crashed early in the moto while Roczen stayed close for fifteen minutes before fading to a distant third. After Anderson crashed, he tried carving his Husqvarna back to the front, but a flat tire ended his shot at a come-from-behind podium.

The fifth fastest lap of the day was turned in by JGRMX/Autotrader.com/Yamaha’s Weston Peick (2:19.127). Weston had a rough moto in the mud of moto one, but the #23 rebounded in moto two with the fifth fastest lap en-route to a fourth—his second best moto of the year. Weston’s 12-4 for 6th overall made him JGRMX’s third rider—behind Barcia in 2nd and Phil Nicoletti in 5th—in the top six of the 450MX overall results, no doubt a solid day for the JGRMX rig.

Like in the 450MX class, the 250MX class had a much different track in the two motos. In moto one, the fastest lap of the race was set by Webb (2:31.009) and the fastest lap in moto two—and the overall fastest 250MX lap—was a full ten seconds faster at 2:20.989, recorded by Musquin. In both motos, Webb and Musquin battled for the win, and in both motos, the guy that finished second had the fastest lap. Webb won the final moto of the day and the overall but only needed the third fastest overall lap (2:21.427) to get the job done.

The second fastest lap (2:21.244) of the day was laid down by Martin while he chased down Webb for the lead in moto two. Unfortunately for the defending Champ, he once again found himself picking up his bike after a mistake. The #1 held on to finish third behind Musquin, but the damage to his Championship points lead was done.

The fourth fastest lap (2:22.772) of the day was the biggest surprise of the Washougal National: Star Racing/Yamaha’s Aaron Plessinger. With Martin and Webb getting all the press for the Star Racing squad lately, we almost forgot about Plessinger, but the mud of Washougal was a perfect setting for the rookie to say, “Remember me.” Aaron was the standout rookie of the year on Supercross and, with his first-ever outdoor podium at Washougal, is leading all rookies in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
