The 2016 San Diego 1 Supercross and round two of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, went south to San Diego, California’s beautiful new downtown Petco Park Stadium. The crowd on hand witnessed another dominant come-from-behind win in the 250SX main event by the defending 250SX Western Regional Champion, Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb, and in the 450SX main event, they cheered as the winningest rider (6 wins) in San Diego SX history, Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Chad Reed, pushed Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey the entire main event. The current 450SX defending Champion was able to hold off the former two-time Champ, but the #22 forcefully inserted his name into the mix as a contender once in again 2016.

The battle for fastest 450SX lap time during the San Diego 1 SX main event also went to Ryan Dungey (48.794). In fact, the #1 won everything possible on Saturday night. He was the fastest qualifier (48.664), won his heat race, had the fastest lap in the main event, the fastest average lap (49.797) in the main event and took the Championship points-leading red plate back home with him. Reedy kept the Champ honest with the second fastest lap (48.947) in the main and his average lap (49.837) being just a tick off, but the gap remained about two seconds for the entirety of the main event. The #1 and the #22 were the only two to have lap times in the 48’s and the only two to have sub-50 second average lap times.

The third (49.044), fourth (49.066) and fifth (49.226) fastest laps in the 450SX main were turned in by the third, fourth and fifth place finishers on the final scorecard: HRC Honda’s Cole Seely, Monster/Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac and Rockstar/Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson. I say the final scorecard because Anderson was the third rider to cross the finish line, but was later docked two positions for jumping on the red cross flag. The man they call “El Hombre” has been training at the Baker’s Factory, and his fitness really stands out in his third overall fastest average lap time (50.127). His average time is the closest of any 450SX rider—Webb’s on a 250SX was closer—to his fastest lap, showing that there’s no fade in his twenty-lap fitness. Anderson, Reed and Canard all kept their average lap less than a second off their fastest lap on the night.

Last weekend the top two overall fastest lap times came out of the 250SX main event, but that had a lot to do with how the track deteriorated as the night progressed through the program. In San Diego, Cooper Webb once again had the fastest 250SX time (49.360) en-route to his second-straight win, but his fastest lap time came in at 7th overall when put up against the 450SX times. But, while his fastest lap time was 7th, his first overall fastest 250SX average lap time (50.092) moved him up to 3rd overall when including the 450’s. Cooper rounded the first turn around 10th and used that lap-for-lap consistency and fitness to pass Rockstar/Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne for the lead on lap twelve. Osborne recorded the second fastest 250SX lap time (49.551), but a crash on lap fourteen pushed him off the podium.

The third (49.743), fourth (49.882) and fifth (49.929) fastest 250SX laps belonged to Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawsaki’s Joey Savatgy, Star Racing/Yamaha’s Alex Martin and TLD/KTM’s Mitchell Oldenburg. Of those three riders, only Savatgy—who finished 2nd—finished the main event inside the top ten. Oldenburg was battling for a podium position early in the main but had a hard crash and finished 15th. Martin got a bad start, crashed and fought back to finish 11th. Oldenburg’s speed has been a huge surprise in 2016, but after qualifying 4th fastest at A1 and 3rd fastest at San Diego 1, he has finished 9th and 15th to start the year.
