The 2016 San Diego 2 Supercross and round six of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, heads back down to the southern tip of California to Petco Park for the second and final time this year. This marks the final round on the west coast of the United States before the series packs up and heads to Arlington, Texas’ AT&T stadium for round seven next Saturday.

In the 450SX class in San Diego, Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey was back in dominant form on Saturday night. With the #1 firmly placed over his red background, Dungey grabbed the start and lead all twenty laps on his way to his fourth win of 2016. Ryan was joined on the podium by HRC/Honda’s Cole Seely in 2nd and RCH/Soaring Eagle/Suzuki’s Ken Roczen in 3rd.

In the sixth Western Regional 250SX Championship main event, Monster/PC/Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy scored his second win of 2016 and left San Diego in sole possession of the red plate once again. Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb was all over the #37, but crashed trying to make a pass stick and finished 2nd. GEICO/Honda’s Christian Craig was looking to back up his Glendale win in San Diego, but he struggled with the track was only able to occupy the 3rd step on the podium.

In the battle for fastest 450SX lap time (57.995) and the fastest average lap time (58.972) at Petco Park, that honor went to Dungey for the fourth time this season. The #1 got out front early, and with Seely pushing him from the first turn to the checkered flag, there was no margin for error for the KTM rider. Ryan was the only rider all night long to dip under 58 seconds, but Seely (58.137) and his HRC/Honda teammate Trey Canard (58.170) not far off the #1 at round six. Just like in the fastest lap time category, Seely was just a tick off in the fastest average lap (59.042) as well. Trey on the other hand was just getting back from an injury and didn’t have the fitness to stay with the #1 and #41, but he was still able to clock an impressive (59.404) average time on the night.

The fourth (58.215) and fifth (58.325) fastest times of the night were also very close to the fastest laps of the night and clocked by Rockstar/Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson and Roczen. In fact, everyone from Dungey in first (57.995), to Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Chad Reed with the eighth fastest lap time (58.528) were all within about a half a second of each other in San Diego. It was all about the start at round six unless your last name was Anderson. Anderson was the only 450SX rider on track willing to move people out of his way and was able to carve his way from eighth after lap one to fourth at the checkered flag.

In the 250SX main event, the honor of fastest single 250SX lap time (59.234) went to Joey Savatgy. While Joey has now won two main events and has the Western Regional Championship points lead all to himself, that stat right there loads his helmet full of confidence. With his first win coming by way of a bike malfunction from Webb, this win was about as straight up as it gets. Moving forward we see that confidence causing the defending Champ fits. With the fastest single lap, Joey also left San Diego with the fastest overall average lap time (1:00.097) as well.

The second (59.322) third (59.371) and fourth (59.504) fastest lap in the 250SX main event were logged in by CycleTrader/Yamaha’s Colt Nichols, Craig and GEICO/Honda’s Jimmy Decotis. Colt was able to use his raw speed to work his way up to fourth from a mediocre start. It’s also that speed that’s beginning to cement Nichols’ name into a possible spot with one of the top tier factory programs for ’17. For Craig, he was fast in San Diego, but never looked as comfortable as he was the week before in Glendale. Still, the #38 racked up another podium and is very much alive in this Championship.

The biggest surprise of San Diego had to be Webb’s speed—or lack thereof. The #1 was not off by a massive margin and even battled for the lead before crashing, but earlier in the year he was laying down heater laps that nobody on a 250 could get near. In San Diego, Cooper had the sixth fastest lap time (59.573), and with that, his invincibility is beginning to melt away in the competition’s heads.
