The 2016 Daytona Supercross and round nine of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship series, went to the famed Daytona International Speedway for round nine of the 450SX Championship and the second round for the 250SX Eastern Regional Championship. In the 450SX main event, Monster Energy / Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac passed Red Bull / KTM’s Ryan Dungey on lap one and rode a perfect twenty-laps to notch his first win of 2016. Dungey hung on for his fourth second place finish of the year and was joined on the podium once again by his Red Bull / KTM teammate, Marvin Musquin.

In the second 250SX East main event of 2016, Star Racing / Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin passed GEICO / Honda’s Malcolm Stewart with two laps to go and sprinted away for his first win of the year. Climbing onto the podium with Martin in Daytona was Troy Lee Designs / KTM’s Justin Hill in second and Rockstar / Husqvarana’s Martin Davalos grabbing another podium in third while Stewart faded back to fourth. Leaving Daytona, Davalos is the only rider with two podiums in ’16 and with that, he carries a two point lead over J-Mart.

In the battle for fastest 450SX lap time (1:04.851) that “W” went to Ryan Dungey for the fourth time of the year. Eli Tomac’s fastest lap was just a tick off (1:04.922), but Eli’s fastest overall average lap time is what won him his fourth career 450SX main event. Eli’s had the speed all year—fastest overall lap time in two main events—but on this night his speed was finally matched with consistency and fitness.

The third (1:05.230), fourth (1:05.868) and fifth (1:06.413) fastest lap times were logged in by Musquin, Rockstar / Husqvarana’s Jason Anderson and RCH / Soaring Eagle / Suzuki’s Ken Roczen. They were all blazing fast on the rough Daytona circuit, but it really puts into perspective how fast the #1 and #3 were. It’s boggles the mind to think that Roczen could only clock one lap as fast as their average lap times.

Just like in the 450SX main event, the fastest lap time in the 250SX main event (1:07.740) went to the second place finisher. Justin Hill entered the first turn around mid pack, finished lap one in sixth and, by the end of the fifteen lap main event. had used the fastest lap and the fastest average lap times (1:09.408) of the night to finish in second behind Martin—who clocked the second fastest lap (1:08.049). It was the second week in a row the #36 had to charge up from the back, and if he gets the start, he is going to be hard to catch.

The third (1:08.247) and fourth (1:08.313) fastest 250SX laps were recorded by Stewart and Davalos. Stewart grabbed the main event holeshot and used that speed to lead for twelve of the fifteen laps, but once he was passed by Martin on lap thirteen, he was immediately under fire from Hill and Davalos—who both went around the #50 to push him back to fourth.

The surprise of the night came from the sophomore on the #64, MTF-backed Dakota Alix. Dakota displayed surprising raw speed with the sixth fastest lap (1:09.840), but what was more surprising was his fitness in Daytona. The KTM rider got a fourth place start and was hanging tough in sixth place before a crash and a subsequent broken collarbone ruined what was turning into a breakout performance. Either way, he showed everyone he has put in the work, and we look forward to seeing more of that from him in the future.

This is how close the top four were for the majority of the main event. Stewart (#50), Martin (#6), Hill (#36) and Davalos (just out of the picture between Martin and Hill) were all within two seconds of the lead for the entire main event. Photo by: Andrea Barnett.
