Heading into the 2018 Motocross of Nations, Team France’s selection process was the talk of the event. The team overlooked Marvin Musquin in favor of Gautier Paulin and Romain Febvre, and the consensus was that they were out of their minds for not selecting Marvin. Full disclosure: I was one of those guys that said they were crazy.
After the selections were final, though, Febvre was injured and Marvin was called up to take his spot. Marvin declined the invitation and Jordi Tixier was given the nod to ride the Open Class along side Paulin in MXGP and Dylan Ferrandis in MX2.
Well, in the end, Gautier Paulin carried the day for the fifth straight year and led Team France to their fifth Motocross of Nations victory in a row in his tenth appearance in the event. After the race, I caught up with Gautier—who is even taller and more of a presence than I remembered—and talked to him about the win and the controversy with the team’s MXoN selection process. The Frenchman was very open and basically laid it down for all the keyboard warriors of the media, internet forums and social media.
