Monster PC Kawasaki’s Cianciarulo Salvages Top Five After Wild Triple Crown in Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. (January 20, 2019) – Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo showcased his speed at the first Triple Crown race of the season, overcoming mistakes to finish fifth overall with 4-14-2 race finishes. The different race format saw the riders compete in three main events with Cianciarulo finishing on the podium in the final race of the night. He’s in the championship hunt, only eight points back from the leader. Teammate Garrett Marchbanks finished 21st overall after a tough night.
The riders took to the gate for the first Triple Crown race of the season with conditions the complete opposite of the opening round two weeks ago. Cianciarulo started the day on a positive note, qualifying second overall under blue skies. When the first gate dropped for the opening main event, it was Cianciarulo that rounded the first turn ahead of the field. He was putting in a great pace, but went down on Lap 4. He remounted quickly in sixth and was able to get up to fourth.
The second main event start forced Cianciarulo to come through the pack after starting ninth. He had made his way into the top five when he went down, eventually getting back up and crossing the line in 14th. In the third main event, he was out for redemption and found it as he led the opening laps of the race. He would eventually move into second, but kept pace to finish on the podium in the final race. His 4-14-2 placed him fifth overall on the night.

“It was a rollercoaster night to go from being out front to falling to finishing on the podium,” said Cianciarulo. “I really want to put the mistakes behind me and I think with three races, I was able to show that I could still be up front even on an off night. We are still in the hunt and will be working hard to make sure we get back on top.”
Marchbanks was experiencing his very first Triple Crown format and the day started on a good note, qualifying 10th. The rookie had a decent Main Event 1 going and was about to make it into the top 10 when he got tangled with another rider and went down. It took a while to get back going and finished 17th. In Main Event 2, he again was making progress toward the top 10 when he went down and was forced to retire early from the race. He decided to sit out the final main event and was eventually awarded 21st overall.

“It was a tough day after seeing some progress in practice,” said Marchbanks. “I felt good after getting into a rhythm in the first race, but after going down it was tough to get going again. I felt pretty banged up and we decided to sit out the final race. After a day like that, it makes you look forward to bouncing back so I’m looking forward to getting back to the normal format next week.”
