January 2019 has been one of the most exciting opening months in Monster Energy Supercross history with the top four in the 250SX West being separated by 5 points and the top four in the 450SX class being separated by a mere 4 points. We have seen six different riders cross the line with wins and have witnessed two first-time 450 winners celebrating on the podium.

Normally by round five we have a clear outlook on how the series will play out, but heading into San Diego this weekend we still have more questions than answers. Heading into Oakland Cooper Webb—winner at the last two rounds—has the red plate in the 450 class for the first time in his career, and Colt Nichols has one win and the red plate in the 250SX West. Neither of them were really even in the conversation as Championships favorites heading into A1.
