SAN DIEGO, Calif. (February 3, 2019) – Adam Cianciarulo and Garrett Marchbanks made it a Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki 1-2 inside a rain-soaked Petco Park with Cianciarulo getting his third win and the rookie Marchbanks getting his first career podium in second. The win propelled Cianciarulo into the points lead as the Western Regional riders head into a four-week break. Marchbanks broke back into the top-10 and sits eighth in the championship standings.
The story to start the day might have been about the rain, but by the end of the night it was all about Cianciarulo. After scoring second in his heat race, Cianciarulo rounded the first turn of the main event out front to take his second holeshot of the season. He quickly was gapping the field as the rest of the riders struggled to keep it on two wheels. Cianciarulo had a comfortable lead as he crossed the checkered flag of the shortened race eight seconds ahead of his teammate Marchbanks to claim his ninth career supercross win.

“This feels so good because the mud brings in added stress and you never know what will happen,” said Cianciarulo. “I just visualized the win, getting through the first turn first and focused on staying in control. My team made a great call going to the Dunlop paddle tire and it helped get me out front. I’ve never won two in a row before so that feels great.”

Marchbanks showed his speed early with a third in the only timed qualifying practice. After finishing 17th in his heat, Marchbanks was forced to go to his first LCQ where he took the win. The extra track time seemed to help keep Marchbanks comfortable and confident for the main event. He started in the top five and kept pushing toward the front, moving into second at the halfway mark. When the checkered flag flew, the rookie was second but was unaware of taking his first career podium finish amidst the muddy chaos.

“I didn’t even know what place I took until after I crossed the finish,” said Marchbanks. “The whole race I kept pushing, trying to make passes. Maybe not knowing took the pressure off me, but I love this feeling and repaying the team for all their hard work. I would love to see it happen again this year.”
