With the defending MXGP World Champ, Jeffrey Herlings, out with an injury early in the 2019 season, Antonio Cairoli had been undefeated heading into round 4 of the MXGP World Championship in Trentino, Italy. At the last round in Valkenswaard, Tim Gasjer looked like he had closed the gap on the Italian, but a big crash in the opening moto cost him a chance at his first overall win of the year. Today in Trentino, Italy, though, the Slovenian put it all together and ended Cairoli’s win streak with a perfect 1-1 performance.

The two battled from start to finish in both motos, but this time it was Cairoli that would make the big mistake and cost himself the overall win. With Tim’s first win of the year, he cut six points off of Cairoli’s MXGP points lead and now trails the Italian by 16 points heading into round 5 in Mantova on May 12. With 6 weeks until the next round, we expect to see Herlings back and making these battles at the front even more interesting.
