Dylan Ferrandis had a stellar night in San Diego, topping the timesheets, winning his Heat and scoring his third Main Event win of the season as the Monster Energy AMA Supercross 250SX West Championship goes on break. His teammate Justin Cooper returned to the podium, as well, keeping the Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing team’s 2020 podium streak alive with a third-place finish on Saturday at Petco Park.

Ferrandis has yet to be topped in qualifying. The Frenchman kept countering the competition with one fast lap after another and took the top spot for the sixth time in the final moments of the session. He went on to back that up with a win in his Heat. In the Main Event, he got off to a decent start and quickly worked his way into third. A few laps later, he closed the gap on the leaders and moved into second. As the race started winding down, the defending champ made an attempt to overtake his rival in the run to the finish line, but he was unable to make it stick. He had another go, took the lead with four laps to go, and secured the victory for the second week running, and his third of 2020. The win not only gives Ferrandis great momentum in the championship, but it also expanded his lead to seven points.

In spite of a technical issue in the Heat race, Cooper was able to manage a second-place finish. He got off to a good start in the Main Event, was once again right behind his teammate in fifth and moved through into third. Unfortunately, as the race wore on, the New Yorker was unable to match the pace of the leaders and had to settle for third. Although hoping for more, his fifth podium finish of the season helped minimize the points loss and allow the Anaheim I winner to regroup as the series heads into a six-week break.

The 250SX East Championship kicks off its 2020 season next weekend at Round 7 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross season on Saturday, February 15, at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Wil Hahn – Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team Manager

“Tonight was a great night for the team with another double podium. Dylan’s back-to-back wins are great momentum before the break. I’m really proud of our West guys. We had either Dylan or Justin on the podium at every race. Now we’re heading East and will look to come out swinging there, as well.”

Dylan Ferrandis – Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team

“I’m really happy. I felt good all day and got the fastest lap. It was another nice race with a big fight for the win. I’m glad I took it and am going into the break with the red plate and more points. Last year, I didn’t have this advantage leaving San Diego, so that’s really good. I’m in a good situation.”

Justin Cooper – Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team

“It was a good day overall, but I was a little bit off the pace. I felt like I got it together for the Heat race. I was riding well, but I bent my shifter about halfway through. It was kind of scary for me because I was going in and out of gears, and I didn’t want to mess up and get hurt. I lost Dylan there and had to take second. In the Main, I was right behind him, but lost the pace a little bit, and they got away. We were close, but we will keep working. I’m really looking to get out front in one of these Main Events and see what I can do.”
