McElrath Takes Top-Five Finish on Tough Night in Daytona

Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing’s Shane McElrath crossed the line fifth to score valuable points in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross 250SX East Championship on a challenging night at the Daytona International Speedway.

McElrath got the night off to a good start with a dominant victory in his Heat race, leading from start to finish and going into the Main Event with the number-one gate pick. Unfortunately, the North Carolinian was unable to repeat his holeshot and make a break from the field. In the thick of the battle inside the top-five, he and another rider made contact and both riders went down. He rejoined the race in eighth and quickly made back positions into fifth. In his attempt to chase down the leaders, he had another tip over and had to settle for the top-five finish.

McElrath holds onto the runner-up spot in the standings, trailing the defending 250SX East Champion by 10 points. He and the Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing team look to regroup and head north next weekend to the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, for Round 11 of the 2020 season on Saturday, March 14.

“Tonight started out great, but unfortunately didn’t end the way we wanted. We have some things to work on. Daytona is always a tough one. We’ll put it behind us and focus on getting back on top.”

“I felt great all day and had a great night going! I got together with another rider early on and we both ended up going down. I was pushing hard to come back and catch the lead group and then I ended up going down again. I’m happy with my riding, just sometimes things don’t go your way. We will be back!”
