American racer Thomas Covington didn’t have the greatest of starts to his MXGP career, first 32-32 in the opening round at Matterley Basin in England and then failing to start the Saturday and Sunday races in Valkenswaard after finishing last in both timed practice sessions.
The former GP winner and Team USA rider though has enough talent to make his mark in the MXGP class and just needed some extra time to prepare for the season, having missed important testing prior to Matterley Basin and Valkenswaard.
With time to prepare on the bike, and enjoying his new home in England, with his beautiful wife Amy Louise, the former factory Husqvarna rider knows that starting up with confidence and a good set-up will be critical for results in the tough MXGP class.
“It’s been good, it was nice to have a little break and regroup and make a plan for the rest of the season. It was tough for me (the first two rounds). A lot of changes for me in general and it is going to take some time to get the bugs all worked out and get settled. We live in England now and I am just getting the chance to settle into the new place there and we weren’t able to travel anyway. It would have been nice to see the family in America), but I have enjoyed my time in England. I was off the bike for two months really and everything was shut down. We did a lot of cycling back home and playing my guitar a little bit and spending time with family in England.”
As for his struggles with bike set-up and his poor showing in England and Holland, Covington feels the bike is a lot different and will help him show some of his true potential in Latvia.
“The bike is a bit different from Valkenswaard. You know, I feel like I didn’t get enough time testing before the season and now this is giving me the time to get the bike sorted out. For sure, the situation I was in, I wasn’t able to come to Europe until late and I was riding a standard bike most of the off-season and I just didn’t have enough time to get it dialed in, but I and the team have been working on it and hopefully, we have it in the right direction.”
Covington will race the Dutch International next weekend and also plans to try and race the opening MX National at Hawkstone Park on August 1 and 2.
“Arnhem is great, I rode here a lot when I was in Europe before and I really like the track. I heard some rumors about a GP being here and I hope that goes through. I will race the International at Arnhem and hopefully the first round of the MX Nationals at Hawkstone Park.”
A great guy and a rider with a handful of GP wins to his name I am sure the American can come through those tough experiences of the first two rounds in 2020 and show some top ten results as he continues his second European motocross challenge, this time on the 450.
