The Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, went back to the legendary Supercross city of Anaheim, California for round number five of the seventeen round series and the 2012 Anaheim 2 SX. The Lites West region and the Supercross Class Main Events  provided another night of nonstop action, so because we are actually full blown MotoXAddicts, we decided to break down the action. Rather than just throw lap time numbers at you, we are taking it a step further and graphing out each Main Event for the rest of the 2012 season and beyond.

On the left of each graph, you will notice the lap times and the numbers on the bottom signifying each lap. Below that, we have the top five riders in the order they finished and each lap time from the Main Event after their name.  Also note that each rider’s fast lap is shaded in blue.

Each week, we will be graphing out the top five from each class to better understand how the week’s Main Event played out. Are we total moto nerds? Probably, but becasue we are not alone, these should be enjoyable for everyone that ventures in weekly to check them out.

In the Lites class, Cole Seely would jump to the early lead setting the pace for the Main Event. On lap three, he would set his fastest lap time of the Main with a 55.23. Unfortunately, he backed it up with the slowest lap of the Main Event when he slid out and gave the lead to the eventual winner, GEICO Powersports/Honda’s Eli Tomac.  Eli quickly showed Cole how much he appreciated the gift by laying down the fastest overall lap of the main event on lap four and running away with his third straight win.

In the Supercross Class, Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s  Ryan Villopoto would–for the second time in 2012– leave Angel Stadium with a Main Event win and the points lead. By reading the graph, it is simple to see why. Early in the race, Ryan showed his dominance by running fast laps at a consistency that could not be touched. While Joe Gibbs Racing/Yamaha’s James Stewart and Two Two Motorsports/Honda’s  Chad Reed battled over the final two podium spots, Ryan just clicked off the low 55’s like clockwork. In the end, despite Stewart passing Reed on lap nine, Villopoto had completed his job of putting him away by lap eleven. By then, he had built a sizable six-second gap, and everyone behind him had settled into their positions.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the top three from the Lites class would do against the top three of the Supercross class? We did too, so we decided to see how they stack up. It was no surprise that Ryan Villopoto was the fastest rider; the surprise was how fast Eli Tomac and Cole Seely were with their opening laps being comparable, even faster at times, than the top Supercross Class riders. Eli Tomac is proving week in and week out that Supercross is not all about horses.

If you like what you see, check back each Tuesday to see how the races break down.
